May

Tea girls

May in Shizuoka, Alive with Numerous Events and the Scent of New Tea.

May is the busiest month of the year in Shizuoka, famous for its tea.

This is because it is the time when the first tea of the season, the "new tea," is picked.

Tea is picked three times a year, and the first time is on May 2, 88 days after the traditional start of spring on February 4.

The costumes worn for tea picking are also unique and individual.

The women, known as "tea girls," cover their hair in hand towels, and present a gorgeous sight in their dark blue kimonos with the sleeves held up with red bindings.

At Greenpia Makinohara, in Makinohara City, you can try out picking tea leaves wearing the tea girl costume.

You can also take a tour through a tea factory, and there are many events held.

You can also enjoy many dishes made with tea at restaurants.

Another famous May festival in the prefecture is the Hamamatsu Festival in Hamamatsu City.

This festival, held from the 3rd to the 5th of May, is divided into two sections: kite flying on the Nakatajima Dunes during the day, and a dazzling parade of floats at night.

It is crowded with people from all over the country, and the entire city is enveloped in enthusiasm.
